New Tesco store opens in former clothing store, council request suggests

Supermarket giant Tesco may soon open a new store in Leicester city center.

The company, which has more than 3,400 stores nationwide, has applied to Leicester City Council for a new premises license for the old New Look store at Haymarket Towers, Humberstone Gate.

Tesco has a number of outlets in and around the city center, but withdrew from its Humberstone Gate base – the former Lewis Art Deco department store – several years ago.

The New Look store closed permanently in early 2021, following New Look’s announcement that it had completed a major restructuring of its finances to cut costs after sales were hit by the pandemic.

The New Look store at Highcross Shopping Center remains open.

Tesco’s request is to allow the provision of late night refreshments (indoors) Monday to Sunday, 11:00 p.m. to midnight, and retail alcohol (off premises) Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to midnight.

Tesco currently has 10 stores in Leicester and many more in the county. Those in the city include the Express stores at Belgrave Gate, Welford Place, Granby Street, Bede Island, Hinckley Road, London Road and Melton Road.

There are also Esso Express stores at Esso gas stations on Fosse Road North and Narborough Road, as well as a hypermarket on New Park Street near Braunstone Gate.
