A man is in custody after allegedly stealing clothes from a ski shop in central Queenstown.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson said the man entered a ski shop in the tourist town around 12.45pm on Thursday and grabbed a pile of clothes from a rack.

He ran from the store, chased by staff, down Athol Street, before jumping into a car and “taking off”, Wilkinson said.

Witnesses lifted the license plate and police found the car shortly after near Lake Hayes.

Police found numerous stolen items inside the car, including clothing from other local retailers, Wilkinson said. “He seemed to have been on a shoplifting spree.”

The property was returned to local businesses.

Southland man Reece Gibson, 33, appeared in Queenstown District Court on Friday to face seven charges of shoplifting, three of theft and one of possession of drug paraphernalia, failing to stop and illegally taking a motor vehicle.

He entered no plea and was remanded in custody to appear again on Monday.
