The new policies are gender neutral, said Asos, with its chief executive, Nick Beighton, adding that staff would be supported “personally and financially.”

“We all face unexpected challenges in life, and sometimes these can create very difficult circumstances that mean we have to step back or change the way we work,” he said.

The new measures “will allow Asosers to take time off work that they need, while raising awareness of the impact of these common life events,” the company said in a statement.

In addition to pregnancy loss, fertility treatment – which is not limited to any number of cycles – and menopause, broader health issues requiring paid time off, such as cancer treatment and surgery change of sex, are also included in the policy framework.

The company will provide up to six weeks of paid leave to its 3,800 and more employees, mainly based in the UK, who undergo such treatment, as well as those fleeing situations of domestic violence.

It comes as Asos first announced its ethnicity pay gap data earlier this week, which showed the median salary of employees belonging to ethnic minorities was now 5.9% higher. % to that of their white colleagues.

This represents a 21.2% improvement in the overall median wage gap based on ethnicity since 2020, the retailer said.

Asos’ move follows online bank Monzo’s announcement in May that it would grant paid leave to employees affected by pregnancy loss, following the departure of its former chief executive, Tom Blomfield.

Blomfield, who founded Monzo, resigned in January after his own problems with anxiety and stress.

Monzo’s policies grant either partner up to an additional 10 days of paid leave if they lose a baby due to an abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth.
