A first look inside the new Lovebirds store in Mumbai
Love – in its many forms, functions and feelings, has often inspired creative people. Songs have been written about it, movies have charted its unpredictable and modulating arc, and designers like husband-wife duo Amrita Khanna and Gursi Singh have instilled it into their intuitive clothing design. Their chosen love language? A link between body and form, fabric and skin.
Emerging from their Delhi home, the contemporary fashion brand that has found favor with cerebral and practical Bollywood minds, like Anushka Sharma, Lovebirds now finds its new home in Mumbai’s Colaba district. Located in the 19th century structure of Wesley Church, the brand’s flagship store is a reinstallation of the ethos that fosters its spirit – love, and its endless iterations. The label commemorates the launch of the store with a photo exhibit titled By love–a celebration of camaraderie and unity envisioned by photographer Ashish Shah and creative director Kshitij Kankaria.
“We wanted to show love from the perspective of an individual and not from the perspective of two or couples. It was a sense of selfishness and a voyeuristic approach to intimacy that is rarely shared. Each person on the photo has an individual perspective on love, unlike most of us who see a romantic relationship as a coming together,” Kankaria shares of the inspired photo essay.
Gursi and Amrita, winners of the Vogue India Fashion Fund and Vogue Italia Talents, have come a long way to establish their brand as the hub of modern provocative design. From their unconventional silhouettes to their minimalist approach to collections, Lovebirds transcends boundaries and innovates with a sensibility rooted in Indian summer. Home to the brand’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection, the church provides a vintage backdrop to the pared-back garments the brand is known for.
Vogue chats with Gursi Singh and Amrita Khanna about the flagship store and its inaugural photo exhibit:
