4 rules to save the most money at clearance stores
HOUSTON – We know you’re paying more for just about everything these days. As we enter the holiday shopping season, we’re looking for ways to help you save money on items like toys, bikes, home goods and more. There are different types of clearance stores throughout the Houston area, and if you follow a few rules, you might be able to save even more.
Supply chain issues during the pandemic mean that right now the deals at these stores are better than ever.
“It goes back to the pandemic, the big box stores were bloated with inventory. So they need a place for that inventory to go,” said Brianna Sumrall, spokeswoman for clearance store Dirt Cheap. “We are a return retailer. We buy products from big box retailers. We buy their returns from overstock, overstock and closeouts.
One of the hottest items at Dirt Cheap is clothing.
“All of these baby clothes are $2 each. And most of them compare to around seven to $10 retail price,” Sumrall explained. “It’s a garment that we would have bought from one of our big box retailers. And the price is normally $35, you’ll get 50% off.
We found designer shoes like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein for $30 a pair. And for the house, sheet sets start at $9 and the aisles are filled with blankets, pillows and bedding.
“So you see it’s originally $99 at your big box retailer, the Dirt Cheap price will be around $50 because that’s a 40% off,” Sumrall explained, showing us a bed in a box.
There are carpets, leaf blowers and vacuums as well as everything you might need for a home improvement project.
“As you can see, there’s anything, fans, faucets, stuff like that,” Sumrall said.
How to Find the Best Deals at Clearance Stores in Houston
“We get trucks several times a week, our store being as it is, you never know what’s going to be in store,” says Sumrall.
Rule #2 Look for retail prices
You can use the Amazon app or a “barcode scanner” app to check retail prices. Most of the time, the prices you find in the store will be the lowest you can find, but if not, don’t be afraid to ask for a price match.
Rule #3 Check Items Carefully
The third rule for clearance stores is to open the boxes and check everything. As you cannot return items, you must ensure that they are working before leaving the store with them. Dirt Cheap has a “test table” where you are encouraged to open things up, plug them in, and test them.
Rule #4 Know the Different Types of Clearance Stores
Most clearance stores will have a bit of everything, but some stores may focus on certain big-ticket items. We’ve shown you the scratched, dented, and overstocked appliances you’ll find on Treasure for Less in North Houston. We also found new bikes at 40% off retail prices. You should also follow stores on social media to see what the trucks are bringing in and to be alerted of flash sales or discount days.
